What Are Height Increasing Shoes, Really?
The Difference
Same person.
Different presence.
The same person, side by side: his usual shoes and Boylift. The difference is noticeable. The reason for it doesn't have to be.

Most men don't want a shoe that looks like it's making them taller. They want a good shoe first.
And if that shoe happens to add a little height, even better.
How it works
Height increasing shoes create elevation inside the shoe rather than putting all of that height into a thick external heel or platform.
Your heel sits higher, while the outside can still retain the proportions of a classic men's shoe.
Why 2.5 inches?
You can make a shoe add more height. The harder question is whether you should.
For Boylift, up to 2.5 inches gives a noticeable difference without making the silhouette unnecessarily bulky or obvious.

Up to 2.5 inches of hidden elevation, while keeping the lift within the shoe.
Does it look obvious?
It shouldn't.
A brogue should still look like a brogue. An Oxford should still work under a suit. You shouldn't have to build an outfit around the fact that your shoes add height.
That's why the elevation has to be considered while making the shoe, rather than treated as something added afterwards.
Someone might notice you're standing a little taller. They don't need to know why.
And comfort?
Adding elevation changes the angle at which your foot sits inside a shoe. That affects fit, heel position and the way the shoe feels when you're actually moving in it.
It's also why we don't chase bigger numbers simply because they're possible. A taller shoe still has to be one you'd want to wear through dinner, through a workday, and reach for again the next morning.
Height is useful when the shoe actually gets worn.
